ZAKARY THAKS

Browsing through my itunes collection I found The Zakary Thaks, a band from Texas that, to my surprise, sounded very similar to The Kinks (band I LOVE). Here's a little taste of their music. Perfect for this Monday afternoon. Enjoy!

The Zakary Thaks were an American garage band from Corpus Christi, Texas, formed in the mid 1960s. The band developed out of the Marauders, a teen group which included Chris Gerniottis (vocals), Pete Stinson (guitar), and Rex Gregory (bass), and who then became the Riptides, adding lead guitarist John Lopez. By 1966, they had acquired a new drummer, Stan Moore, and had become the Zakary Thaks – the name being a mutated version of one seen in a magazine. read more...

MILLION YOUNG
Sunday, December 20, 2009

my

Million Young began as the lucid dream of a 21 year-old Floridian named Mike Diaz in the summer of 2009. Since then he has spent his time developing an intriguing mixture of electro-pop and experimental noise that has recently manifested itself in the form of the 5 track: Sunndreamm EP. Currently, Million Young is in the lab blending expansive textures and melodies (a la Beach Boys / Animal Collective) with nostalgic analog riffs and spiraling rhythmic loops (see: Washed Out / Teengirl Fantasy) to craft what Spring 2010 will know as his first full length release. Tremor combines rhythms and sound across genre borders, fitting component parts of varying tradition together in eloquent symmetry. The artist breaks sound barriers across South America and presents his digital folklore tracks to a new, global audience. On his last record, “Viajante,” Tremor executes folklore melody through a digital context. Layers of rhythm are fortified with modern synth loops and paired with timeless Andean flute, strings and drum samples for evocative hybrids. Glitch, IDM, and electronica reinvent classic rhythms for today’s listener. (text thanks to bolachas.com)

THE BLACK KEYS

One of my top rated albums right now. Can't stop listening to it! They remind me a little of Radio Moscow. Enjoy ;)

The Akron, Ohio-based duo The Black Keys is well known for its concentrated, hermetic approach to recording, hunkering down with rudimentary equipment in an unfinished basement or commandeering the floor of a vacant local rubber factory to create terse but soulful rock that seems to have time-traveled into the pair's amps from some long-ago radio show. But guitarist-vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney now admit they were ready for a change of scene-as well as some company. So when they got the opportunity to work with Grammy Award-nominated producer-musician-provocateur Danger Mouse, a/k/a Brian Burton (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, The Grey Album), they agreed, for the first time, to leave their familiar environs. They weren't quite willing to cross state lines yet, though. more...

LR obsession of the week : T. REX. Here are our most played and top rated songs from this band (we so nice!). Sexy electric guitars to start our weekend. Yes, the weekend should start on Wednesday! So relax, download these tunes, and turn it up! love, LR.

T. Rex were an English rock band fronted by guitarist, singer and songwriter Marc Bolan. Formed as Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1960s London, the folk rock group's debut album My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair... But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows (1968) reached number 15 in the UK. In the 1970s, they achieved mainstream success as a glam rock band with hits such as "Hot Love," "Get It On," "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru." After waning commercial success in the mid-70s, T. Rex ended in 1977 after Bolan was killed in a car accident. read more...

Radio Moscow - Brain Cycle copy

This album is no doubt one of the best I've heard since 'Woodstock'; not to mention 2009.
I just can't get enough of it, all the tracks are amazing! RAMONA FAV.

Transmitting infectious old skool rock vibes, Radio Moscow completely owns rock’n'roll in 2009. The massive power and forward-thinking drive of progressive rock. The dirty, romanticized blue feelings of blues rock’s lament. The acidic and addictive fluorescence of psychedelic rock. The regeneration of the rock’n'roll myth that garage rock brings. All the toughness and coolness of the electric guitar-based hard rock. The dope and awesome pounding beating of stoner rock. All can be found in the dirty album-formed rock bible that is Brain Cycles. read more...

WHITEY

Whitey is an ongoing solo project by N.J Whitey. He collects books, strange memories and childish grudges. He is a hard character to pin down- his genre-twisting songs swing wildly between styles, and his dismissive attitude towards the music industry means there are few shows, and even fewer interviews. He has to date had no major record deal, but has still released over 30 records under a variety of names. Yet without any significant industry investment his distinctive sounds have broken through to mainstream daytime radio in the U.S and elsewhere, and for four straight years his music has been a fixture from rock clubs to fashion runways, from movie soundtracks to television, computer games to skate films. From Japan to Iceland, Moscow to Hollywood. From the Sopranos to Grand Theft Auto. Gradually this cult U.K artist has built a strange home in the shadowy ground between high fashion and mainstream entertainment, between pop radio and what little is left of the underground. An outsider who relishes this status, and celebrates this outsider ethos in his work. more..

prince

Controversy is Prince's 4th album, released October 14, 1981. For the most part, the album was an expansion of its predecessor, 1980's Dirty Mind. The title track is a funk workout, where Prince seems to be bored of the media attention he was receiving. "Do Me, Baby" is a classic Prince ballad, with falsetto whoops and camp outbursts peppering the track. "Private Joy" is an upbeat, synthesizer romp layered with saucy innuendo. "Let's Work" is a highlight, based on a funky bass line with a stripped down synth-funk sound, foreshadowing Prince's next album, 1999. "Annie Christian" is an odd political number with sinister lyrics. The album finishes with the rather crude rockabilly ode to mutual masturbation, "Jack U Off". This record was considered to be his most political to date. The album was also an important stepping stone from his early works to the more mature song writing of the mid 1980s. read more.

Soviética is a band from Bogota, Colombia, that was created in 2008. Their music is a tribute to the night and everything that moves within its curves and corners. Between raw synthesizers and infinite sequences, they describe their work as "dark dance." Dance Before Dark is their debut EP with recommended songs such as "Sucia" and "Blank" -- ramona favs. Enjoy them! Want more? Get the whole album here.
